Hedvig Adds Another $18 Million for Software-Defined Storage

Mr. Lakshman founded Hedvig after creating or co-creating two important pieces of technology: Dynamo–a NoSQL database that inspired Amazon DynamoDB, now part of Amazon Web Services–and Cassandra, a widely used NoSQL database he developed at Facebook Inc. that Facebook later put into open source. NoSQL, which means “not only SQL” in reference to the popular SQL database language, is more flexible than SQL because it can accommodate data that is structured in different ways.
